Hopefully we will never have to test the first two, but the third is always on display thanks to the access that the World Wide Web gives media to fans. Over the weekend there was one story that every one latched on to--an alleged confession by Lance Armstrong to Oprah Winfrey (Barbara Walters busy or something?).
It's been reported that he has apologized to the people at his former charity, LIVESTRONG, for the embaresment that he caused them. Supposedly he has also been calling select people to make personal apologies to as well.
Should there be an apology on the way it will be an interesting about face for Armstrong. Throughout the years he has adamantly professed his innocence. Even after his lifetime ban and titles were stripped he maintained that he did no wrong.
So why come forward now?
I doubt that it has anything to do with the chance that his suspension could get severely reduced. In the short time since his downfall he has gone from esteemed public figure to someone that the nation has basically forgotten.
To go from a highly regarded public figure to national pariah must be tough. Should there be an apology coming in this interview-- set to air on Thursday at 9 PM ET on Oprah's network and simulcast on Oprah.com--he'll be front and center once again.
Because if there is anything that American loves more than seeing its heroes fall it is seeing them rise once again.
