Time for Kevin Sumlin and Texas A&M to Fall Back Down to Earth?

Moving on from Johnny Manziel will not be easy for Texas A&M next season, but with the talent on board Kevin Sumlin should not have many--if any--problems.


Kevin Sumlin can do no wrong in the state of Texas. While at Houston he presided over one of the most prolific passing attacks college football has ever seen. In his first season at Texas A&M he took a team that had been inconsistent and mediocre and turned it into a national championship contender.

What is not to love about a man that can do that? Well—if he doesn’t do it again a lot.

The arrival of Sumlin and the emergence of Johnny Manziel brought the kind of notoriety and attention upon the football program at Texas A&M that had been absent for many years. Just because Manziel has moved on to the greener pastures of the NFL does not mean a dip will be acceptable to fans.

In fact, people will expect more. They will expect to see that the coach that they have been so concerned about losing the last two seasons to other schools or the NFL prove that he is worth the concern a possible departure raised and the money spent to keep him.

There is no reason to think that he can’t. The question is whether he will have the personnel in place to do so.....
