As the story goes, Ditka was playing cards when he noticed that his hands were not acting right. When he realized he was having trouble talking he knew something was up and went to the hospital where he was told he had a "very minor stroke."
Now 73, da Coach has not had any known health issues of late. He did have a heart attack back in '88 when he was still coaching (at the tender age of 49). Within 8 days he was back in the office; after 11 he was on the field.
Had Ditka not gone to the hosptal when he did there is no telling if anything worse could have happened. Going right after noticing symptoms was the smartest thing he could do and definitely helped doctors do their jobs.
Da Coach has now left the hospital; no word yet if he'll be back in the studio next week.
In honor of da Coach what you say we take a little stroll down memory lane?
As a former tight end you might think he would be good on his feet and all, but instead he seems a little more adept at just knocking things over and then getting abused by a legend:
That's not what most of us really know and love da Coach for though. His playing and coaching prowess aside, Iron Mike was always good for a few quality sound bytes whenever there was something around to record him talking. Few--if any--were as good at entertaining the crowd while just speaking his mind at press conferences:
Anyone that can give us treats like these Coors Light commercials is alright by me:
Glad you're alright Coach.
Anyone else wondering when SNL will come out with a "Da Bears" skit?
I can see it now, " Ain't no stroke can beat Ditka. In fact, if strokes where a football team and they were to play Ditka, Ditka would beat them--by himself mind you--227-0."
