Jets QB Conundrum Continues to be Perplexing

The New York Jets finally made the move that the world had been waiting for all season on Sunday when they benched Mark Sanchez.

Poor Sanchez has never been the best of QBs in his four seasons although there has been times where he was pretty good. It is hard to say that it is his fault either. The Jets have never been a big passing team since he's been with the club choosing instead to focus on the run and pass more as an afterthought. As a result, the team never bothered to hold on to or develop any quality receivers.

Let me qualify that a little--no quality receivers that understood what the concept of teamwork is or that there is no "I" in team (yes, I'm talking to you Santonio Holmes).

Tebow could have (and still could be) the kind of QB that Rex Ryan would want. He is essentially another running back; a dual-threat QB in name, but one who set up the pass in college because defenders had to account for the run as well. Since they could not key on either factor--and Tebow is a bad*ss in his own right--he was able to gouge teams with the run and pass when they tried to load the box against him.

You would think that Tebow would be a non-factor now since Greg McElroy did fine in his pro debut Sunday, but this is the New York Jets. If they can make a spectacle out of it (it being absolutely anything) they will.

To add to the drama--today we are hearing that Tebow could have played:
“Could I have pushed, went out there and played? I think I could have managed it,” Tebow said, via Seth Walder of the New York Daily News. “I feel like I’m healing up.”
The initial report made it sound as if there was more to Tebow not playing then the reported rib injury. However, after reading it I think it was one of those situations where Tebow would have done and could have because he is one tough SOB, but he isn't fully healed yet and should not have played.

For some odd reason Rex Ryan has yet to state who will be his QB this coming Sunday when the Jets head to Jacksonville. Logic would dictate that McElroy would now get the nod. The team has had Tebow all season and barely used him. There really isn't any reason to think Ryan would play him now.

Why Sanchez would even be in the mix is an absolute mystery as well, but then again--this is the New York Jets we are talking about. Maybe Rex is just trying to make sure people will talk to him. As soon as it appears that the team is looking to next year the fans and local media will be out for blood.
