When Brett Favre finally walked away from football a couple seasons ago there were few that thought he was actually done throwing balls. The man had retired numerous other times and come back--why not do it again? After the last season of injuries, poor play, and actually missing a game (gasp!) you would think that he would have wanted to redeem himself.
Sometimes you have to know when to hang it up, and apparently for Brett that was his time. It wasn't the way that he wanted to go out, but perhaps that is because he has known all along that he would always come back in some way, shape, or form.
It would not be surprising to see someone give him a shot at as a quarterbacks coach or even an offensive coordinator. Then he could also take the route that many former players take and head into the broadcast booth.
Come Sunday he will get that chance when he joins the NFL Network crew as part of its pregame coverage team.
He is supposed to be a guest on the show along with regulars Rich Eisen, Kurt Warner, Marshal Faulk, Deion Sanders, and other former Super Bowl winners.
It would not be too surprising if this ended up being more of an extended tryout. Maybe it is just me, but it seems like more and more of the former players that have been given an opportunity to try there hand at broadcasting or being an in-studio analysts are crashing and burning.
Rather than give informative commentary they present a diatribe of salacious remarks that is more akin to a cable news program than what folks want out of a football game (i.e. Merril Hoge and his hatred of Tim Tebow; Warren Sapp and his recent comments on Ndamukong Suh; Marshall Faulk and his Super Bowl conspiracy).
Favre may have ended his time in the game in a bad way playing poor and with an off-field scandal, but for the bulk of his career he was one of the best in the game. His many commercials and endorsement deals show that he is pretty comfortable in front of a camera.
The only question now is whether he can make intelligent conversation about the game that people want to listen to.
