Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, the alleged mastermind behind the bounty program the Saints ran for a few seasons, would never work again.
Think about it. The indefinite suspension was not the problem. Eventually Goodell will lift that just to be done with the whole mess.
You have to wonder what owner would want him coaching his team. Williams has engaged in these kinds of underhanded tactics throughout his career. Nowadays image means something in the league. Whoever hires him will have to deal with constant questions about whether he is back to his old tricks again.
If his players appear overly aggressive people will wonder. If his players appear not to be aggressive enough the sarcastic comedians that populate the Earth will pounce.
Who would want that?
Apparently the Tennessee Titans. Word is that the Titans are looking to hire Williams to take over the defense.
Of course nothing can actually happen until Roger Goodell actually lifts his suspension, but there is no reason why he shouldn't now. Sean Payton was reinstated recently, the players were cleared; the only thing that still keeps this stupid scandal in the media is Williams still being suspended.
Goodell made a good move by allowing Williams to look for work. It would have been a better one had he just gone ahead and lifted the suspension, but even though he knows this scandal just needs to go away at this point he has to still be a little miffed.
Plus, since Williams is perceived to have been the man behind the whole thing Goodell probably feels he needs to be tougher on him--even if it is keeping him dangling just a little bit longer.
Mike Munchak does need some help, but can y'all imagine what could happen if the Titans suck again next year? Could we see Williams be a head coach in 2014 (assuming the defense at least rocks next season)?
He was with the team for a about ten years at one time so Bud Adams is familiar with him...
