The New England Patriots got some bad news early in the game against the Houston Texans Sunday when tight end Rob Gronkowski had to leave with pain in his forearm.
He was not able to return, but it didn't matter since the Patriots went on to win 41-28 anyway. So you could say that it was no big deal.
Except that it was.
As luck (bad of course) would have it the Gronk has broken his forearm and will now be out for the rest of the postseason. It was the same forearm that he broke earlier this season on a late point after attempt against the Indianapolis Colts (Week 11). He had surgery then and returned to action in Week 17.
Grokowski was wearing a big white pad on his forearm, but it wasn't enough protection when he landed on his forearm going after a ball in the first quarter.
He'll now have to have surgery again so should the team make it back to the Super Bowl again he'll be watching it from the sideline in street clothes. So since his season is over does that mean we might see more of this again?:
[Hint: He's the big dude in a white t-shirt that had a so-so game just a few hours earlier because of a bum ankle.]
Getting back to the Big Game might be easier said than done due to some other injuries. The Patriots were forced to do without Danny Woodhead for most of the game after he suffered a thumb injury in the first quarter. Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Chandler Jones was lost in the third quarter to an ankle injury.
There is no word yet on the severity of either injury.
