No one ever said football players were geniuses, right? How
else can you explain the rather stupid move that a Georgia recruit pulled on
Notre Dame this past weekend?
Stanley Williams, a junior currently playing at George
Walton Academy in Bethlehem, Georgia, was scheduled to make a visit to Notre
Dame over the weekend.
When he was asked about his visit from the Notre Dame
site Blue and Gold Illustrated he acted as if he the visit
went great. He went as far as to say that he looked forward to furthering the
relationship between him and the university.
The only problem is he was never actually there. Williams,
who has already committed to Georgia but is still making visits to other
schools fabricated the entire visit in the interview. When asked about it by
another site, 247Sports, he owned up to it immediately, but the question
remains--what in the world was he thinking?
There are probably many non-Irish fans that thing the
incident is funny in light of everything going on with Manti Te'o. Williams had
to be thinking of the fake girlfriend controversy when he decided to pull the
prank.
But why do it? Just to be funny? Maybe schools are not too
concerned that a player would show such blatant disrespect and incredible
immaturity. However, I would think that some would also be concerned that a
young high school kid that has yet to prove anything and can still have his
offer pulled would be dumb enough to do this.
When you start playing college sports a player's actions are
often considered representative of the university and program. Who wants to be
associated with this kind of kid?
