Neon Deion Sanders was known for his commercials (certainly not his rhyming or dancing skills) back in the day along with being one of the best shut down corners and return men to ever play the game.
He has managed top turn himself into one of the better players-turned-analysts covering the game today; not the best by any means, but as long as ESPN is around he'll be in the top half of the game. However, he seemed to succumb to the same 'disease' that many commentators have caught in the last year, talk-too-muchitits, during the pregame show Sunday.
During the pregame show he made this comment in reference to the thousands of former players currently suing the league over concussions suffered while playing and the long-term effects that they have suffered because of them:
"The game is a safe game, the equipment is
better," Sanders said on the NFL Network set. "I don't buy all these
guys coming back with these concussions. I'm not buying all that. Half these
guys are trying to make money off the deal. That's real talk. That's really how
it is. I wish they'd be honest and tell the truth because it's keeping kids
away from our game." (Yahoo)
Ouch. Watching the X-Files lately there Deion? Conspire much?
Concussions have been a hot topic in the NFL, college, and even in high school and I'm sure pee wee league football as well. It's been no secret that the NFL has been under siege by literally thousands of former players claiming that the league did not do enough to combat concussions or that it hid information that linked head trauma to permanent brain damage and things like dementia, Alzheimers, and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).
There seems to be to no end to these lawsuits. By mid-August there were over 3400 former players involved in lawsuits. The league has been trying to push some of the responsibility off on their insurance companies. It filed suit against more than 30 in hopes that they could be legally bound to cover the cost of defending the league against the players' claims of neglect.
Deion is like every other person in the country--he is entitled to his opinion. However, just like every other employee and public figure, he will be just as entitled to the backlash that he is bound to get over this mess.
You might be speaking #truth, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to just be quiet and keep it to yourself.
