Puerto Rico never had a chance against the DR in San Francisco Tuesday night. Edwin Encarnacion got the scoring started with a two run double in the first, and that would end up being all they needed. They would go on to win 3-0.
The real story on the night was a strong pitching performance by the DR team. Samuel Deduno pitched five shut out innings striking out five. Octavio Dotel, Pedro Strop, Santiago Casilla and Fernando Rodney each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to preserve the win.
Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano was named the MVP of the tournament after setting a WBC record with 15 hits. He batted .469 for the tournament with four doubles and a pair of home runs to go with six RBIs and six runs scored.
