Northwestern Apologizing for 'Wounded Warrior' Uniforms [UPDATE]

Veteran's Day has inspired a number of teams to wear stars and stripes themed uniforms. Most of them have just altered the look of the helmet (still very cool), but not Northwestern. Not only have they altered their helmets, but their gloves and jerseys as well. The design is pretty unique and has been a hit online.

Yet the school is apologizing for them anyway.

According to FTW, critics have found the red splatter on the uniform to look a lot like blood--and it wasn't meant to be. The splattered paint was meant to give the design a distressed look.

Ummm...okay. Either way still pretty cool. So why the apology? Because folks thought the splatter was meant to be blood.

That's it.

If a lot of people had complained about it I could see why they would want to apologize, but everything I've seen has been positive. I took the blood spattered look as symbolic; something that was in honor to those who have bled for this country.

So the misunderstanding was a cool thing Northwestern. No need to apologize.

[UPDATE]

After looking at the Rivals.com Northwestern message board I saw a number of posts from veterans that found them offensive. Not all of them did, but there were quite a few. So if the group that the uniforms were intended to honor find it offensive--well, that's a problem.

The school has said they still plan on wearing them.
