Calling the Cowboys Defense Horrible is a Compliment

Even the most die hard of Cowboys fans can't deny this one, simple truth--the Dallas defense is horrible. Actually, calling them horrible is too nice. After the performance they gave against the Chicago Bears Monday night a new word needs to be created to appropriately describe them.

For those that missed the Monday night game here is the tale of the tape:

  • Bears 45 Cowboys 28: The offense was not at its best, but 28 points should win you a game
  • The Bears scored on every single drive--every single drive!!!
  • A career back-up quarterback, Josh McCown, completed 75 percent of his passes for 348 yards and 4 touchdowns
  • 149 rushing yards given up
  • Just one sack and no turnovers

That is just plum awful, but I suppose in all fairness it is par for the course this season. Overall the unit is ranked last in the league and gives up 421 yards a game (126.7 rushing, 27th; 294.9 passing, 31st). The only thing that keeps them from being worse than they are in scoring (25.3 points/game, 22nd) is that they are pretty good at causing turnovers (13 interceptions and 12 fumbles).

There is one thing that they do right. The unit has recorded five touchdowns on the season; only the Chiefs have scored more (6).
