Should This Have Been a Penalty Against Oklahoma? Mike Tomlin Probably Thinks So!

During a crucial play late in the game  the Oklahoma Sooners looked like they were going to get hit with a 15-yard penalty because many of the players had crept out into the white stripe to get a better look at a big play. That's all good and fine until they get in the way of the referee and he gets knocked to the ground when guys don't get out of the way in time.

Seems like a no-brainer of a penalty, right?

Nope.

After a short discussion the refs waved the flag off. From what the game announcers said it must have been because the players were trying to get out of the way, but just didn't move quick enough.

Umm... so what?

The players should have never been there in the first place. That lane is supposed to be left clear for the ref to be able to run down the sideline with a play and that very scenario doesn't occur. Who cares if they were trying to move? They were in the way!

So if an offensive lineman says, "But I didn't mean to hold!" or "I was trying to let go of his jersey!" he should be off the hook?

I don't know about this one refs. Unless someone has a really good explanation for this one it looks to me like you guys screwed the pooch on this one.
