NFL Might Legalize Pot for Some Players in the Future

Teams might find it a lot easier to recruit free agents in the future if Roger Goodell and the NFL actually follow through with a possible change to the collective bargaining agreement in 2021. They might allow players that play for teams in states that have legalized marijuana to go ahead and smoke up.

The current league policy is pretty straight forward and has been for years--no drugs of any kind no matter what the reason. There are a few exceptions to the rule of course, but players do have to jump through hoops to get them approved.

There certainly isn't any wiggle room when it comes to recreational drugs and there never will be, but in the future if marijuana is legalized and becomes a more accepted medical alternative for pain management the NFL could soften its stance.

"I don't know what's going to develop as far as the next opportunity for medicine to evolve and to help either deal with pain or help deal with injuries, but we will continue to support the evolution of medicine," Goodell said.

The question started coming up when Colorado and Washington changed their laws, but with just two states and two teams in states where pot is legal there is no way the rule is going to change. However, with many states discussing their own marijuana laws and thinking of changing them that could change.

Some estimates have as many as 70 percent of the country legalizing pot by 2021.

Should that happen it appears that not only will players make some serious green they are going to be able to smoke it--if they happen to be on the right team that is.
