Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick Nearing the End of His Rope?

New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick will go down as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history (yes, in spite of the videotaping scandal). However, as with all the great ones there time on the sideline has to come to an end. While the 61-year old coach has already stated he will be back next year you have to wonder if the end is near.

After reading about his Monday press conference I can't help but think it might.

Belichick is known for holding some of the most boring yet awesome press conferences in the sports. No one can say something without saying anything quite like he can. Reporters can't trick him in to revealing anything he doesn't want to reveal. As for emotion--forget about it! He is as stoic and cold at the podium as he is on the sideline.

So when he came right out and bashed his former star wide receiver, Wes Welker, without anyone having to ask him about the play that injured defensive back Aqib Talib it came as a bit of surprise:

"It is a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib. No attempt to get open. And I’ll let the league handle the discipline on that play. It’s not for me to decide, but it’s one of the worst plays I’ve seen. And that’s all I’m going to say about that."(PFT)

I am sure that Patriots fans will be quick to tell me I'm wrong, but I can't recall ever hearing Belichick be so open with his criticism of another player--or make accusations of dirty play!

So how does this relate to him nearing the end of his rope? Maybe he's had enough. Maybe he is tired of keeping up appearances and dealing with all the crap off the field while still trying to have a winning team on the field. 

Maybe he was mad because he didn't want to let Welker go so he stuck out. Maybe he thought Welker was mad since he didn't go to bat for him so he took out his top defensive back.

He also offered up that he was coming back next season without much prompting which could be interpreted as him possibly thinking about it. Whatever the reason for his break from character the fact is he had it. Maybe--just maybe--its a sign that he's tired of having to do all that he has to do and would rather hang out with his hot girlfriend instead.

After all, it's not like he's hurting for money and will not get a job offer from every network in existence when he does hang it up.
