Canadian Skiing Legend Sarah Burke Remembered and Honored Prior to Halfpipe Finals in Sochi

This has to be one of if not the best moment of the Winter Olympics. Thursday night in Sochi a group of skiers at the women's halfpipe event paid tribute to one of the pioneers and legends of the sport--Canadian skier Sarah Burke.

From Mashable
Burke died in 2012 from injuries suffered in a skiing accident, but her memory was in the forefront of the minds of many at the event. Since skiers were banned from wearing any stickers on their apparel or equipment to honor Burke a group of volunteers decided to honor her anyway  by skiing down the halfpipe in the shape of a heart.

"I think her lasting legacy is to ski as hard as you can and love it," American Maddie Bowman told an NBC reporter after winning the gold. "It takes all of us to fill her shoes."

Canadian ski halfpipe coach Trennon Paynter honored her further by spreading her ashes on the halfpipe in Sochi as well as near the Olympic rings.

"That was a little bit of a stealth mission," Paynter said Saturday (via Sportsnet). "I feel pretty good about knowing Sarah was all over these Olympics in our hearts and quite literally too."
