Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson Can Demand a Trade--But He Will Not Get It

Andre Johnson has been the rock of the Texans wide receiver corps and one of the best in the business for years, but with the team staring a rebuilding year in the face the 32-year old may be out of patience with the team.

So don't be surprised if he is playing for another team sometime in the near future.

His frustration with the team was pretty evident last season, and it doesn't appear to have gotten any better. At a charity event Tuesday he made it clear that he is not sure whether Houston is the place for
him anymore.

“This offseason has been very frustrating for me,” he said. He also said he does not intend on going to any OTAs or minicamps.

So does this mean he will try to force a trade? Probably not--because he will never get it.

At 32 teams are going to be concerned with his age and injury history. With a base of $6.5 million coming to him this year teams may be interested, but it is unlikely the Texans are going to be willing to take an $11 million+ salary cap hit in dead money.

Next year--even if he has a solid year in '14--his base will go up to $10.5 million. If he stays healthy and is in the top five maybe, but even then it will be a hard sell.

The best time for Houston would be in the final year if his contract ('16) when a trade would only generate a little over $2 million in dead money. However, his base will be $11 million.

Johnson may very well be stuck in Houston. With the way his contract is structured, his age and his injury history he'll be a hard sell to anyone.

Sorry Andre. You might as well get to work with the quarterbacks and make the most of it.
