Missouri Tigers Lose Wide Receiver For the Season Due to Failed Drug Test

It has not been a stellar off-season for the Missouri Tigers wide receivers. First the group lost it's best player in Dorial Green-Beckham, but now the unit may have some depth issues with the year long suspension that Levi Copeland has been hit with.

According to reports in the St. Louis Dispatch Copeland was suspended for the 2014-15 season due to a failed drug test. He wasn't taking any drugs, however, but an over-the-counter supplement that happen to be banned by the NCAA.

Copeland admitted to taking the supplement and not clearing it with the team's strength and conditioning coach (who could easily have told him not to take it).

So--do you think the NCAA is being  a little heavy handed? It was an over the counter supplement; not something illegal. The rules are pretty clear on this though:
According to NCAA Bylaw 18.4.1.5.1, if a college athlete uses a nutritional supplement containing a banned substance and tests positive, he's subject to at least a one-year suspension and loss of eligibility.

The tough part is figuring out exactly what is banned since the NCAA list eight classes of substances rather than every substance. If that didn't make it challenging enough if something in a supplement is chemically related to something banned than it to is banned.
