What they'll miss are the guys that college football used to be about and maybe will be again someday; guys like Greg Ward Jr. of the Houston Cougars.

Ward and the rest of the Houston Cougars took on Temple Friday night. After battling to a 17-10 halftime lead Ward--with the help of an extremely tough Houston defense--controlled the second half en route to a 31-10 win.
So--what makes him so special?
It's not he fact that he had nearly a perfect night against the Owls--which he nearly did. Ward connected on 29 of 33 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns. He also tacked on another 44 yards on the ground (13 carries).
All in all it was a good night, but not exceptional. Plenty of guys have had nights like that and better. So why is he what college football should be about?
Click on his name in the ESPN box score and it says the 5'11" 178 pound sophomore is a wide receiver. No, it's not another case of ESPN's interns screwing up. Just a few weeks ago that is what Ward was playing.
To be fair, he was a quarterback in high school, but that just further illustrates my point. In Ward we have the kind of guy that coaches dream about--talented, athletic, and willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win.
Want him to catch passes? Sure thing coach. Throw them? Alright. Return punts? He did last year.
Want to stay out of trouble so he can do all those things and more?
Football is a team sport. It should be about the team and be played by guys that put the team first on and off the field. That is what love of the game is and its those kinds of guys that play it the way it should be played--with true, honest passion.
Guys like Houston Cougars WR/QB/PR Greg Ward Jr.
