Indianapolis Colts Show Us Why the Gunners On Punt Coverage Teams Are Important [GIF]

On each punt you can often see a pair of players on the punt team sprinting like bats out of hell (called gunners) in order to get down field so they can make a play on the ball or the punt returner before he has a chance to gain much (or any) ground. They can mean the difference between a minus five-yard return and a 25-yard one depending on how well they do their job.

That is why punt return teams will typically harass these guys with a couple people, but sometimes--like in this GIF from Sunday night's Colts-Patriots game--they are able to get away and make an incredible play (like this one):
