Mets and Yankees Open Bid for Shortstop Stephen Drew

According to offseason MLB reports, the two teams from the Big Apple have their eyes fixed on veteran shortstop Stephen Drew, who won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2013. Both teams are currently working on their rosters heading to next season in an attempt to increase their MLB odds to win the 2015 World Series.

Drew has played for four teams during his nine-year career, and was traded to the NY Yankees after playing 39 games with the Boston Red Sox. With the Red Sox and Yankees, Drew hits a career-low .162 with seven home runs and 26 RBI in 85 games. For his career, the 31-year-old infielder is a .256 hitter with 97 homers and 442 RBI.

The Yankees need a replacement for Derek Jeter, and were initially linked early in the offseason to the Chicago White Sox’s Alexei Ramirez and Texas’ Elvis Andrus. However, the Mets seem to want to acquire a shortstop, but don’t appear inclined to go get a big name. They were reportedly interested in Rockies’s Troy Tulowitzki, but talks were unsuccessful.

As far as other offseason plans go, the Yankees are believed to be interested in middle-of-the-rotation starters to team with aces Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda next season. However, over the last week there has been some rumors that they may be contemplating entering the race for former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.

The Yankees are also trying to find more insurance at third base, where they are reportedly not confident recently reinstated-but-aging Alex Rodriguez will be able to reach the same level as he did in the past.

What is critical at this point is the fact that both the Yankees and the Mets were interested in signing Drew last offseason. The Yankees even made an offer, however, Drew’s financial requests exceeded what either club was willing to pay for his services.
