The Dallas Cowboys are one of those teams that likes to dance rather close to maxing out the salary cap at just about any given moment. When the team announced that it had signed Rolondo McClain to a $3 million deal it was kind of a surprise since the team had just about $2 million in space.
That is, there wasn't enough space until Tony Romo restructured his deal to give the team a little relief.

The team has stateed that it was able to create $13 million in cap space thanks to the restructuring. To do so what they likely did was take his base salary for this season of $17 million, cut it to the minimum of 970K, but turn the difference in to a bonus of $16.03 million which will be spread out over the next five years (roughly $3 million each).
Before you get excited Cowboys fans, this is not being done in order to make a run at Adrian Peterson. The Cowboys needed space to sign McClain and their draft picks.
