San Francisco 49ers Have to Wait Another Week Before Their First Round Pick Can Join the Team

The San Francisco 49ers have yet to see their first round pick, Arik Armstead, on the field. On one hand that means they haven't lost him for the season already like Jacksonville lost their first round pick, but it also means that the guy they are going to need to contribute early and often is not getting up to speed on the NFL game.

So--what's the hold up? Contract issues or something? It's school.

Armstead has not been able to participate in OTAs because Oregon has yet to have their spring semester finals. According to NFL rules rookies are not able to participate in any team activities other than rookie mini-camp until after spring semester finals.

If guys actually went to class after they were drafted it would make sense, but they don't. They spend their days leading up to the draft preparing for it and working out. After the draft they are working out even more and studying their playbooks.

Attending class is the last thing on Armstead's mind.
“I’m a football player now,” he said. “And I want to be focused on the season and playing football. I’m not in school right now. I think I have plenty of time (to get a degree). But that’s not my main focus now.”

It's a nice idea NFL, but this rule is pretty much worthless. You might as well get rid of it.
