Initially, Browns head coach Mike Pettine was reluctant to commit to Manziel going forward, but he didn't rule out the idea.
It appears, however, that he has come to a decision. The Browns will be Johnny Manziel's team going forward. Pettine made the announcement Tuesday so when the Browns return from their bye week Manziel will be starting.
Manziel passed the eye test against the Steelers Sunday, and had the stat line to show for it. He completed 73 percent of his passes for 372 yards and one touchdown. In the three games that he has started this season he has thrown for 933 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.
"The film showed it even more; he showed significant progress," Pettine said.
At 2-8 the Browns are pretty close to out of the post season race (not mathematically, but pretty darn close). If Manziel is going to be the quarterback of the future the team needs to find out if he can handle the job.
If he does--great. If he doesn't--maybe they address the position yet again in the draft.
For McCown it means he will be moving on to another team in need of a place holder at quarterback next season. He has looked good at times, but had a little too much trouble staying healthy which ultimately gave Manziel the opportunity he needed.
The question now is whether or not he'll be able to do anything with it.
