Ridiculous, right? Absurd! However, it is also technically correct. Interaction with the fans is against the rules, but it is usually something that is not called.

Washington State Hit With Unsportsmanlike Conduct Penalty For High-fiving Fan [VIDEO]
The referees are there to make sure the players do not try to gain an unfair advantage and play within the rules of the game. That is supposed to be it--but it wasn't during Washington State's game against Arizona State. After scoring a touchdown wide receiver Keith Washington celebrated a little by high-fiving one of the fans. Nothing unusual. Players do it all the time, but for some reason the refs decided to call him for unsportsmanlike conduct (taunting).
