Refs Expect a Little Professionalism on MNF--and They Are Right!

When fans looked at the schedule for Monday Night Football they probably thought that last night's game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs was one thy wouldn't mind missing. The Steelers are  beyond the shadow of a doubt one of the better teams in the NFL while the Chiefs are, well--not so good.

The game itself was surprisingly good, but the moment that fans will likely be talking about more than the outcome (Steelers won in OT) is a rather unique penalty that was called on a Pittsburgh player.

Actually, they'll probably be talking about Ben Roethlisberger's shoulder more than anything else. Big Ben left the game and went to the hospital to get it checked out. What makes this injury an even bigger concern than it normally would be is that it is in the shoulder that was already injured back in the preseason, but was deemed something that he could play with.

It has been reported that he suffered a separated shoulder; something that could keep him out for up to four weeks.I digress...

The Steelers were actually penalized for cursing at an official (it's in the rules); a 15-yard sucker. The video kind of cuts it out, but Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin reacted rather strongly when told what the penalty was. You could see that he commented, "This is professional football."

From the way the commentators were reacting during the game they made it sound like they thought the ref was being petty and childish for making such a call. They made it seem to me that since this was the NFL cursing the officials--the authority figures in charge of maintaining order in the game--was acceptable.

I'd like to ask them where in life is it considered acceptable to curse at the authority figure. I can't think of any. If anything, what they should have been saying is that the player in question needs to grow up a little and use a vocabulary that his mother would be proud of. I doubt the words he used would be anything Mom would like.

If the commentators and Tomlin needed a little more proof why the call was a righteous and justified one just check out the way the Steelers fans react in the video.

Technically, humans are animals, but we are supposed to be a little more involved than this. (Nice work with the video Cosby Sweaters)
