As I'm watching the Texas A&M Aggies play the Crimson Tide I can't help but wonder how the tsips (that's the Texas Longhorns to those not familiar with the rivalry) did with their first play tribute to Darrel Royal.
For those that are not into the history of the game, Royal was one of the best college football coaches back in the day and is credited from introducing the wishbone offense to mainstream college football back in the 60's.
Royal passed away Wednesday morning. Longhorn head coach Mack Brown was a longtime friend of the Royal's and as a tribute pledged to run the first play of today's game against Iowa State from the wishbone.
The wishbone was all about the running game. Royal was not a big fan of the pass and once said that only three things can happen with the passing game and two of them are bad. Brown was true to his word and did run the first play from the wishbone, but with a rather modern look that Royal might not have been too fond of.
Although he probably would have appreciated the strategy behind the move. Anyway...here's the play:
