Catching Up With the Bowl Games: Independence, Russell Athletic, Meineke Car Care

Bowl season is really in full swing now. A football fan can no longer get away with just watching whatever is on. No--now he has to choose what to watch!

>Gasp!<

Now I suppose you could just DVR the other games, but what are the chances that you are not going to find out the outcome of the other games before you watch them? Then again., I guess if you just watch them right after you finish the one you watch live, well--then I suppose you are good to go.

Either that or you really need to get out more dude (or dude-et). Come on; there is more to life than football...

But thankfully there are folks like me that put together posts like this so that you can be in the know on all the games without actually having to watch all of them.

Independence Bowl (Dec 28): Ohio 45     Louisiana-Monroe 14

This game should have been the show case that LA-Monroe quarterback Kolton Browning had dreamed of, but instead it was the coming out party for running back Beau Blankenship of Ohio.

Ohio did its best to ride Beau to victory and he had no trouble carrying them there. The junior finished off his first full season as the Bobcats main man in the back field with a 104 yard, 4 TD performance. Tyler Tettelton helped out with a 14-22, 331 game for the Bobcats behind center.

On the other hand, Browning and the Warhawks had a snoozer of a day; Browning was 21-39 for 219 yards with 2 TDs but three INTs.

This one was all Ohio, all the time. If you didn't watch the whole thing, you really didn't miss much that you can't get in the highlights.

Russell Athletic Bowl (Dec 28): Rutgers 10     Virginia Tech 13 OT

There really isn't much I can say about this one. Either it was a pathetic offensive performance or a really awesome defensive one. Part of me wants to give the defenses a lot of credit for this one, but I watched part of the game; the offenses stunk.

This is not to say the defenses were not great. Even crappy offenses score when the defense doesn't do its job. That certainly wasn't the case here. Between the two defenses there was less than 400 yards total offense in the game; in most bowl games that's what single teams have been averaging.

Tack on five turnovers (two for Rutgers and three for VT) and it was definitely a day for the defense.

Meineke Car Care Bowl (Dec 28): Texas Tech 34     Minnesota 31

Fans got exactly what they wanted in this--an awesome game. There was plenty of offense--just not so much that it was a blowout; good defense but not so good the game was boring; solid special teams play; big plays; dramatic ending.

Seth Doege had a solid day going 31-45 for 271 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs; not exactly the memory that he wanted NFL scouts to have as they start to evaluate draft prospects, but likely good enough to be a free agent invite to camp at least, if not a 6th or 7th round pick.
