Catching Up With the Bowl Games: Compass Bowl

Compass Bowl (Jan 5): Ole Miss 38     Pitt 17

There is always a lot of talk every bowl season about what could be done to fix the system. Now, while I am a proponent of the system, if there is one thing that I would change (there would actually be a few, but I'll hold them for another post).

Once the big bowl games--the BCS ones and the other big ones like the Cotton Bowl--the 'other' ones need to be done. I'm all for all the match-ups between teams that barely qualify. Some of them often end up being among the best games of the season. However, they are like the opening act to the main event; they don't belong on television after New Year's Day.

Today's Compass Bowl is a perfect example. Both teams barely qualified at 6-6 (which should not be good enough in my book--but again, that is for another post). That tells me they can play decent ball, but they are not that good.

If you watched the game that was pretty clear. Pitt did not belong on the field with Ole Miss today. This game was all Rebels, all the time. Were it played early in the bowl season I wouldn't care, but at this point with all but the BCS Title game played its like a wedding cover band is following Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, and George Strait.

Or worse--Justin Beiber is playing.
