Johnny Manziel Might Need a Little Protection From Himself

It might sound strange to say, but it must be tough to be Johnny Manziel.

No. Really. I'm being serious.

Think about it for a minute. Last summer he was just another college kid. He was into going out with his friends. He liked to have a good time--as was evident when he got arrested after getting into a fight and giving cops a fake ID.

It isn't anything that hasn't happened to millions of college kids or thousands of football players. When it did it barely made a blip in the news; probably because at the time he was just another college football player for what was thought to be an average team. Heck, he was barely that to be honest--he had yet to play a single down.

At the time there was no telling if he would. The coaching staff thought he was way too turnover prone; not something you want in the leader of your offense. Going into spring practice it was considered a given that sophomore Jameill Showers  was going to be the man.

In the end Johnny Football won the job, and the rest--well, is history. Literally in fact since he managed to become the first freshman (redshirt or otherwise) to win the Heisman trophy.

That is technically where you can say the beginning of his 'trouble' has started. Now he hasn't gotten in any actual trouble, but it almost seems as if the world is waiting for it to happen. The only problem is that he isn't doing anything to stop it from happening.

What he appears to be realizing now is that all eyes are now on him, and every absolute move that he makes is going to be heavily scrutinized from now till he quits playing football and likely a few years after that.

America loves having heroes; especially young country boys like Johnny. The country loves the fact that a kid from small (and I mean small) town Texas can go to a major university and rise to the glory that he has in such a short time. Being a freshman--barring injury--he has at least tow more years of making the dreams of Texas A&M fans and football fans everywhere come true.

At the same time he is going to have everyone and their mother waiting for him to mess up because if there is anything we like more than a hero rising above the rest is watching him fall. For some strange reason we like it when they become less than perfect; outright bad even. We pay even more attention when our heroes are arrested then when they use their notoriety to do some good in the world.

Just ask Tim Tebow. He can talk about that for days.

So when Johnny posts pictures on social media sites of him sitting on the floor at consecutive basketball games; visiting the locker room of the Rockets; hanging with LeBron James and the other Miami Heat stars; golfing with the Jonas Brothers--

Okay, maybe that one is not such a big deal anymore. Does anyone even care about those guys now that there not kids anymore?

Anyway...Pictures like the ones that he posted over the weekend just scream for him to get followed by paparazzi even more then he already may be. Flashes a wad of cash that he won at a casino? A picture of him partying at a club? Possibly with a bottle of Dom Perignon in hand?

I get it. The adoration has to be intoxicating. The attention from celebrities; the invitations to talk shows and golf outings -all of it has to be intense. To be 20-years old and hanging out with a babe like Megan Fox has to be a rush.

Working on the assumption that he has done nothing wrong it gives people the inclination that he might. He still isn't old enough to drink; even if he was it stands to reason that he can't afford Dom--especially after buying floor tickets to a pair of basketball games.

Johnny has commented recently on how he hasn't changed; that he is still being the same person that he always has been. That's great, but what he needs to realize is that even though he feels like the same person he's always been he is not.

Johnny Football is a full-fledged celebrity. Everyone wants to see what he is doing. Everyone wants to ride his coattails. Everyone wants to be along for the ride, but at the same time they will be more than happy to see him fall.

Life is going to be different from here on out for young Johnny Manziel, and he will have to act accordingly (maybe Tim Tebow could give him a few tips). If he doesn't he may find that the fame and the love will go away even faster than it came. If he isn't careful it could hurt his team--and I'd assume his friends--in the process.

Just ask Reggie Bush how that feels.
