Sugar Bowl (Jan 2): L'ville 33 Florida 23
The game was not as close as the score would make it appear.
This was another one of those games where all the so-called experts got it wrong. Much like the Orange Bowl the previous night (that was close for three quarters) this one was tabbed as a bad choice in match-ups. Florida, the rep from the all powerful SEC, was expected to pound on the lowly Cardinals from the Big East who were clearly out of their league.
Yea, right.
This one was all L'ville, all the time from the start. The Cardinals got it started early with an interception by Terrell Floyd off of Jeff Driskell to put Louisville up seven (a lead they would never lose). When the Cards did get the ball for the first time on offense Terry Bridgewater made it look easy marching the team down field in 12 plays for the first offensive TD of the game and a 14-0 lead.
Florida was never able to recover and get in the game. They resulted to trickery (some rather good trickery) to close the gap at the end of the first half to 24-10:
But some trickery at the start of the second half backfired on them. An onside kick recovered by Louisville resulted in this Bridgewater pass to Damian Copeland to put stretch the lead out to 20 points, 30-10.
Florida did make an effort to close the gap late in the game. This 102-yard kick return for a touchdown made the score 33-17 with just under 8 minutes left.
Jeff Driskell led the Gators back into the end zone one more time, but it was too little too late; final score--Louisville 33 Florida 23.
