On paper the Washington Redskins/Seattle Seahawks game appeared to be one of the better match-ups of the post season. In it we had two coach of the year candidates guiding teams led by rookie quarterbacks and future stars in Robert Griffin III and Russel Wilson. Both teams have solid running games with capable receivers as well as solid defenses.
Both teams have been red-hot in recent weeks, but only one could keep it going after Sunday.
It looks like it will be the Seattle Seahawks after they beat the Redskins 24-14.
Washington came out tough. The first quarter was all theirs as they scored touchdowns on their first two drives while holding the Seahawks to just a field goal on their first two drives.
However, it became pretty clear early on that RG3s knee was not feeling too good. He was seen heading into a private room behind the bench; I believe the team doctor was in tow. Later in the second quarter he was clearly limping as he made a short run out of bounds.
In the end the Redskins simply did not have the quarterback that had led them into the playoffs and their first division crown in years. Seattle on the other hand did. Russel Wilson took a little while to warm up, but once he got warm he was the nimble QB that fans have grown to adore over the course of the season.
RG3 was not capable of being the running threat that the Redskins needed making Seattle's job on defense significantly easier. Washington didn't have to worry about him running and his ability to scramble was seriously impaired (as was evident when he was sacked in the open field during the second half).
I can't blame him for wanting to stay in the game and help his team win, but this is where Mike Shanahan was supposed to look out for him and hold him out. Of course by time they did pull him out he was injured once again (on the play below):
The problem really dates back to Week 16. After watching Kirk Cousins play so well against the Browns the week before the team should have played him again the following week against Philadelphia (in week 16). The Eagles were showing promise under Nick Foles, but they essentially still sucked.
I know that the Redskins still needed to win in order to make the post season and/or win the division. To go far they know they needed a healthy RG3. Against the Eagles they should have given Cousins another chance, but with RG3 suited up in case he couldn't get the job done.
I would venture as far as to say they should have done the same thing against Dallas too. Even if they played him against Dallas, getting two weeks to heal (by skipping the Eagles game) is better than one when it comes to any injury, but especially knee injuries.
Hopefully the injury is not too serious. Get well soon Robert Griffin III. We'll look forward to seeing you play next season!
Seattle will move on to face the Atlanta Falcons at 1 PM ET next Sunday.
