Outback Bowl (Jan 1): South Carolina 33 Michigan 28
Watching games off the DVR is an option when it comes to choosing what you are going to watch, but sometimes--like today--it is good enough.
I opted to watch the Capitol One Bowl rather than the Outback Bowl New Year's Day. I saw Nebraska/Georgia as a much better game than South Carolina/Michigan. While I am happy I watched the Capital One game part of me wishes I had watched the Outback Bowl.
Steve Spurrier, the college version of the evil genius (Bill Belichick), did something that Rex Ryan failed miserably at this year--he used the two QB system to perfection. Both Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson had banner days. So good in fact that after Thompson threw the go-ahead TD with 20 ticks to go Spurrier decided that both deserved game balls.
Michigan and Devin Gardner gave as good as they got. After falling behind early they battled back to take a 22-21 lead--their first in the game--late in the third quarter.
They lost it after Connor Shaw completed a beauty of a 31-yard pass to Ace Sanders to put South Carolina back on top 27-22. Garnder responded just a few minutes later with a 17-yard dart of his own to give the Wolverines back the lead, 28-27 (yeah, everyone kept trying to convert a 2-pt conversion with no success).
The Gamecocks were not going to give this one up without a fight. Shaw started the drive, but it was Thompson that finished it with this stellar pass for the win:
