Prior to the draft Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson made it known what he hoped the team would do—and the team answered.
Andre Johnson is a stud. That goes without saying. Even though he has been the primary and some would say only receiving threat for the Houston Texans the last few years he has still been able to catch over 100 balls for more than 1500 yards in three of the last five seasons (injuries slowed him down in the other two).
You would think that he would love the position that he is in, being the unquestioned No. 1 man, but he is smart enough to know that he can’t do it all alone.
He needs some help. So he asked for it, much like he has in other drafts. The difference is this time the team answered by taking Clemson’s DeAndre Hopkins with the No. 24 pick in the first round Thursday.
“Nothing’s too big for him,” said offensive coordinator Rick Dennison.
In Hopkins the Texans get another big, physical wide receiver that can play opposite of Johnson, and will likely cause opposing coaches to lose a little sleep as they try to figure out how to stop both of them and Arian Foster.
“We’ve got a great quarterback in Matt, a great running back and great wide receivers,” Hopkins said. “We’ve got all the pieces to the puzzle to win the Super Bowl. I feel like I have a great cast around me to help me grow as a rookie.”
Of course a Super Bowl will not be won by the wide receivers alone. The team still had to account for some holes on defense and on the offensive line to really solidify its position as a front runner for the Big Game next season....
