The main NASCAR story for this past weekend--heck, the only story--should be Kyle Busch winning the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series races. However, it is likely going to be secondary next to what happened during Saturday's race in the infield.
During Saturday night's race a verbal altercation led to a fan committing suicide. According to reports, Kirk Franklin died at 10:48 PM from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head. His body was found in the back seat of a truck. It is believed, but unconfirmed, that alcohol was involved.
Since the race sponsor was announced in March there have been some that have thought the National Riffle Association sponsoring a race was inappropriate. The NRA has come under scrutiny of late with the prevalence of gun violence these days.
However, in fairness to the NRA, the organization has been involved with NASCAR for over a decade.
With the media attention that gun control measures are getting nationwide the fact that a person used a gun to commit suicide at a race sponsored by the NRA is bound to be seen as another example of the need for stricter measures.
Questions are likely to be asked about security at NACAR events as well as alcohol use.
