Fantasy Baseball Free Agent of the Week: Miami Marlins Starting Pitcher Jose Fernandez

Since the Miami Marlins suck it is pretty unlikely that many folks have this guy on their fantasy baseball rosters. Guys (or gals) if have space on your roster where you can stash someone you want to put in a claim for this kid--Jose Fernandez-- ASAP.

Jose is only 20, but his minor league stats are pretty darn impressive. When the club opted to bring up to the Show now rather than let him get some more experience in the minors there were plenty of folks that thought the Marlins were nuts (shocker, right?).

Well, on Sunday young Jose showed the world exactly why the team went ahead and brought him up. In five innings of work (follow link to see a video of Jose at work) against the New York Mets he struck out eight while only allowing three hits, a walk, and one run.

He left the game with a 3-1 lead, but the bullpen gave up a pair of runs in the ninth giving the Mets a 4-3 win and Jose a no-decision.

So while he didn't get the win or even a quality start Jose showed the kind of promise that makes guys in keeper leagues salivate. The only problem is he plays in Miami. That being said, you can probably count on him for strikeouts and the occasional win; hopefully the team will let him go a little deeper and he can at least earn a quality start.

Since he does play for the Marlins you will want to watch the match-ups. The team proved Sunday that they will not give him much support and the bullpen can't be counted on to hold a lead (surprise). However, with the right match-ups he will likely be a pretty dependable earner for the back end of your rotation.

Fantasy seasons are not won off drafting alone. The right free agent pick ups are key. Claim Jose Fernandez and you will not regret it.
