If the idea sounds a little strange to you then you are not alone. When I first heard that the Westboro Baptist Church was going to hold a protest outside of Chesapeake Energy Arena Wednesday I thought, "Wow, what a horrible name for an arena" followed quickly with "What in the world do those people hate about basketball?"
The answer was pretty easy--Jason Collins.
Collins became the first active player in one of the four major American sports to announce that he is gay on Monday. Since the news broke you can hardly turn on a new-type program without hearing from Collins or someone's reaction to the news--both good and bad.
It is the kind of thing that transcends from the sports world into mainstream society with all sorts of talk shows commenting on it, the President speaking out in support of Collins, and people from all walks of life saying "its about time!"
And it is exactly the kind of thing that the Westboro Baptist Church likes to hate.
Since the news broke members of the church have sent threatening messages to Collins and for some odd reason Kevin Durant along with other people involved with the NBA. They've been using the hashtag "#GodH8sTheNBA."
I can't fine any reason why the Church is picking on Kevin Durant, but they are. Why the Thunder/Rockets game is a mystery as well (they are also going to be at Game 6 between the Nets/Bulls).
These folks are infamous for their beliefs and how they love to shove them on other people. For some odd reason they fail to see that while they are allowed their beliefs--as inflammatory and hateful as they may be--that others are allowed theirs as well.
If you want to see their hatred in full force check out the link to another article. I thought about including a tweet and a copy of their press release announcing their intentions, but that stuff is--well, there is no way in hell I could ever post that kind of crap (but if you want to see it follow the link).
