Remember hearing the story about how someone bumped into Alabama's 2011 BCS National Championship Trophy and broke it? Broke is a nice way of putting it. That sucker was shattered!
The dad of long snapper Carson Tinker will never forget that day since he is the one that accidentally bumped into the trophy, but he can now be at peace with his misdeed since it helped raise money (a lot of money) for charity.
At a celebrity golf tournament on Sunday the team auctioned off the remains of the busted trophy to help raise money for charity. When it was whole the trophy was worth about $30,000; busted up it brought in $105,000 at auction.
Yes, that's right. The broken trophy went for $75,000 more than the whole trophy was worth.
To some this probably sounds nuts. Why on Earth would you pay so much for the pieces to a trophy? The reasons are actually pretty clear.
Alabama loves it football. Broken or not, the trophy is still a pretty big piece of Alabama history. The chance to own a piece of that history--for true fans it would be priceless.
Yeah, it would be nice if the trophy was whole, but if that was the case it would not be up for sale.
Okay fine. So for die-hard fans it would still be pretty cool, but for $105K? A few hundred or a thousand maybe...
The money raised at the tournament and via the auction is all going to charity. To be more specific it went to a home for kids, boys and girls ages 8-16. Can you think of a better reason to spend $105K then to grab a piece of history, but more importantly to help kids?
Whoever did make the winning bid is obviously someone who can afford to make such a donation, but just because you can does not mean you should or have to. The fact that he/she did is a credit to that person and to the University of Alabama.
So well done Alabama. Roll tide!
