What he does for those guys will make a lot of veterans take notice (and other agents), but it's what he did for future WNBA star Skylar Diggins that will make future stars take notice (and should scare those same agents).
He bought her a car for graduation--a freaking Mercedes Benz!
Kids, let this be a lesson to you. Stay in college and graduate--like Skylar did from Notre Dame--and have Jay-Z's Roc Nation represent you and you too can get a Benz for graduation!
Jay-Z had to know that in making this incredible gesture (because no matter how good Roc Nation negotiates her contract the WNBA does not pay that well) he stands the risk of setting a dangerous and expensive precedent. Future grads are going to expect similar kindness after all.
So dumb move right?
No!
If he does actually buy a Benz for each player that actually graduates it will still be a genius business move. Chances are that he has or will get a deal with an agency. The exposure alone might be worth it to some agencies to give a Benz or two.
Even if he just gets them severely discounted or is stuck paying full price the move will be genius. There is bound to be a few top level college talent that is on the fence when it comes to choosing an agent. If going with Roc Nation nets them a car the choice is easy.
Now those top players will be even more marketable than Skylar, and will be easy for someone with Jay-Z's business acumen to line up some tremendous endorsement deals.
You know--the kind that will make him, the agency, and the player a lot of money.
The premise is simple. You have to spend money to make money sometimes, and Jay-Z is going to make some serious bank as an agent.
So what if it cost him a few German luxury automobiles (he can swing it).
(and look how happy he made Skylar!)
