Dwight Watch 2013: Lakers Need to Send him to Golden State

The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in a position that they are not accustomed to. Rather than stay with  one of the most historic franchises in history they have a player (Dwight Howard) thinking about leaving after just one season.

If you can give any weight to the rumors and rants you hear on television or read on the internet there is a very strong chance that he is going to do just that. More than likely the Lakers are going to get nothing for him either.

That is, unless they trade him to the Golden State Warriors.

It's always better to get something rather than nothing, and the only team that needs to do a sign and trade deal is Golden State. With the guys that they have they can't sign Howard to a max deal without dumping some salaries via trade. The problem is that the only guys that people want are two that the Warriors used in their pitch to the big man, Harrison Barnes and Klay Thompson.

Stephen Curry would of course be of interest, but asking for him would be akin to asking the dumbest question in history.

What Golden State has put on the table is Andrew Bogut, guard Richard Jefferson, and Andris Biedrins. All three are good, solid veteran players and would free up $34 million--just what they need. The problem is who is going to want them? The three didn't play much last year and combined for less than 10 points a game.

If Golden State is going to make it happen they are going to have to offer up some draft picks. It's been said that they are willing to toss in a first round pick, but without Barnes or Thompson thrown in it may have to be a lot more than that.

When it comes down to it, winning is what matters. Golden State has not made it past the semifinal round of the conference playoffs since they won the NBA Finals back in the 1974-75 season. If Los Angeles were to press the issue they could bend on what they are willing to give up.

And than the Lakers, Golden State, and Dwight Howard could actually walk away from this deal happy.
