When it comes to sporting events the home team wants fans to be as loud as they can be. It's called the home field advantage. It messes with the opposition and invigorates the home team. Soccer fans are especially good at it. Organized chants are common at soccer matches, and while this is usually fine, sometimes fans can take it a big far.
The New York Red Bulls think their fans take it too far with one particular chant, and they have decided to engage in a unique plan to get fans to quit.
The chant typically occurs when the opposition has a free kick. It's simple, too the point, and it gets the point across really, really well.
"You suck A**."
With the league hoping to get bigger and better television contracts it helps if the broadcast is family friendly. Thousands of fans chanting about a person rear end--that's not good.
So the team wants to pay fans to stop.
Yes, pay them--with money.
The four fan clubs, the Empire Supporters Club, the Garden State Ultras and the Viking Army, each have the chance to make $500 a game if they will not use the chant. That's all they have to do--not use the simple phrase.
There is a catch of course. The team said it will only pay out in blocks of $2000 so the clubs will have to cut the chant out for four games before they can get paid.
If they actually split the money up by person than this is not going to be that big a deal. Who cares if all you are going to get is a few bucks?
Easy--just imagine the party they can hold with a couple thousand bucks!
