Kirk Cousins Injury Could Be The Opportunity Rex Grossman Needs

Fans of the Washington Redskins had to feel their hearts jump into their throats a little when Kirk Cousins went down in the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After losing Robert Griffin III last season they are all too aware of how important having a quality back-up quarterback is.

However, depending on the extent of the injury it could be just the opportunity that Rex Grossman needs.

Injuries have really hampered Grossman throughout his career, but here he is at the tender old age of 32 and he is still in the game. The problem for him though is he may very well not make the final roster. Plenty of teams have gone with just two quarterbacks on their roster so it would not be shocking if the Redskins were to decide to do just that.

If that is indeed the case than Grossman needs every chance possible to convince teams that he can still play. When healthy he wasn't bad; he just couldn't stay healthy long enough to really wrap up the job. Should they go with three they may opt to keep Pat White since he is younger and likely a lot cheaper.

So Grossman needs to have a lot of good tape floating around so that when a starting quarterback goes down--and one always does--the team will think about him.

Another possibility--assuming Cousins foot sprain is not too bad and he recovers quick enough a team in need of a QB could try and trade for him. He is young and has shown some talent; as long as he is healthy he is going to be trade bait.

Heck, maybe Grossman could even become trade bait (low round pick of course) should he play well enough.

Only time will tell...
