His name was Leonard Berry, and for the last two decades he had served as the Bantams’ City Gent, a jolly, rotund fellow that walked around in a bowler hat and City kit goofing off with the fans at Bradford City games.

“I used to have supporters chant things at me, like ‘who ate all the pies’. I used to get them going and then grab my belly.”

For much of his life he was the picture of what the team wanted–a big, fat guy patterned after former team chairman Stafford Heginbotham.....
