QB Controversy Brewing in Tampa Bay?

This is where the preseason acts as sort of a trap. Josh Freeman has been the man in Tampa Bay for a few years now. As the incumbent starter it's natural that he doesn't play much in the preseason, and that his backup--Mike Glennon--does. Of course the more you play the more of a chance you are going to look good.

However, since he has been at the helm the Buccaneers have been a mediocre team at best. It has to be kind of telling that the team didn't want to extend his rookie deal, but has opted to have him play out the final season first.

If they believed in him they would wrap him up.

With that in mind you have to take a look at how Glennon is doing and wonder if the team might be better off moving forward with him. Against Baltimore he wasn't great (11-23, 169 yards, 1 interception), but he sure looked better than Freeman (4-7, 34 yards).

Friday night against the Patriots he was better (12-22, 121 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 interception). Freeman? he was 2-3 for 8 yards.

Yes, it is just preseason and Glennon is getting reps against the opposition's second and third team players so it should be easier. He is getting more of an opportunity to play so he is getting more chances to shine.

But than again--Freeman has had four seasons to shine and really hasn't. Is it time to cut him loose?

  3. I think everyone needs to calm down. Glennon has had more reps so he will look better against 3rd stringers. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

    1. True, but after the way Russell Wilson emerged last preseason you know folks are going to be wondering/hoping that they might have the same kind of luck. It will be interesting to see if Glennon gets some reps with the first team in the next couple of preseason games (and what he does with them of course).

    1. Great numbers? Yeah the 4000+ yards was good, but the 55% completion rate is not, neither is 17 interceptions next to 27 TDs. Heck, 27 TDs is pedestrian at best. Oh, and a QB rating of 81.6 is mediocre. I appreciate that you support your team, but maybe your expectations are just low. Romo had 'great' numbers too last season and the Cowboys sucked.
