Sports can be dangerous. I get that. However, at the same time the game--whether it's football, baseball,, basketball or tiddlywinks--is the game. You change it too much and it isn't the game anymore. It becomes less interesting to watch.
Now the collision at the plate will not likely have too much of an effect on the game. Folks will complain (everyone but catchers probably), but after some initial outrage they will just let it go. The play doesn't happen that often so it will likely not be missed too much.
My worry is that when they start tinkering with the game they are going to keep tinkering with it--like the NFL keeps doing (and we all know how awesome they are doing changing the rules every season).
What will be missed is the look of pride and joy on the face of the catcher when he knows he took the best the runner had and still got the out.
