Houston Texans Have Their Coach—So Now What?

Houston has taken step one towards rebuilding the franchise by hiring Bill O’Brien to be the next head coach. So—what’s next?

When the last second ticked off the clock in Tennessee to officially bring an end to the second worst season in franchise history (the 2005 season also finished 2-14, but averaged fewer points per game). It was a merciful end; something that needed to happen because without the team and fans can’t move forward.

The end did come and the time for rebuilding started the second the game finished. As of Tuesday night the team took the first step towards returning to playoff form—hiring PennState’s Bill O’ Brien to be the team’s third head coach in franchise history.

Few will take issue with the hire if any. O’Brien comes to the team with a solid resume having spent a good amount of time under Bill Belichick in New England before taking over the scandal plagued PennState program in 2012. He has proven that he knows how to overcome less than desirable circumstances—a skill he will likely need his first season in Houston.

With Step One complete the tough work begins—filling out his coaching staff and deciding who to take with the No. 1 pick in the draft....
