Michael Sam has been dominating the headlines for the last week ever since he announced to the world that he is gay. The announcement has elicited a lot of hate from people, but that did not stop him from attending Saturday's basketball game between Missouri and Tennessee where the football team was honored at halftime.
While there will be many that will call him courageous for doing so the real kudos in this case belong to the fans.
Some fans are probably not too happy with him, but the Mizzou Faithful decided to show Sam and the rest of the world that sexuality is not that big a deal. What is important is that he is a member of the football team and a part of their community.
So when you mess with him you mess with them.
People from the most hateful church (you know who you are Westboro Baptist Church) known to mankind decided they were going to try and rain on the football team's day by picketing and yelling all sorts of mean, hateful things (because that's what they do).
But the student body wasn't having it. Rather than let those people (read that with disdain; that's how I'm typing it) put a damper on the festivities they created a human barrier to block out the picketers and than sang the school fight song so their slurs would not be heard:
It would be very easy for the school and the student body to put some distance between themselves and Sam. They would not have to say anything or give any kind of opinion on him or his sexuality. All they would need to do is nothing.
Instead they have made it clear that there is no room for hate on their campus--as it should be. So kudos to you Missouri students.
Well done. Well done indeed.
