North Carolina Makes History in Upset Win Over No. 5 Duke

The North Carolina Tar Heels went in to Thursday night's game against No. 5 Duke unranked. However, if there is one thing that college basketball fans can count on it's that the Tar Heels are going to be tough whether the polls like them or not.

After beating Duke 74-66 the polls could like North Carolina an awful lot next week.

Fans had to wait an extra week to see the two rivals play thanks to some crazy snow and the game certainly ended up being worth the wait for fans of the home team. The first half was probably not to their liking (Duke was up by seven, 37-30). However, the second half totally made up for it.

Duke had actually opened up an 11-point lead within the first five minutes of the second half, but then it happened. A cold front hit and the team couldn't buy a basket (going scoreless for about six minutes at one stretch).

Led by Marcus Paige and Leslie McDonald the Tar Heels charged back in the second half. When McDonald hit a jumper with 3:54 left he gave North Carolina the lead for good (62-60).

With the win the Tar Heels made history by becoming the first team in history to beat the top four teams in the AP preseason poll during the season (Michigan State, Louisville, and Kentucky).

Final score: North Carolina 74 No. 5 Duke 66
