Scholarship For Walk-Ons Established at South Carolina in Honor of Former RB Marcus Lattimore

San Francisco 49ers running back Marcus Lattimore must have made a tremendous impact on folks in and around the South Carolina Gamecocks program back in the day. Yeah, when he was healthy he was a beast on the field, but you don't name a scholarship after a player that has only been gone since 2012.

Which someone has.

@cwinston75
South Carolina Athletics via The Garnett Way Campaign has announced the endowment of a scholarship given by the David Glen Family to be named after Lattimore. It will be given to someone that exhibits character, integrity, and leadership skills; all things that Lattimore displayed while he was at South Carolina.

"Marcus has been an inspiration to many, including our family," said David Glenn. "It is our pleasure to give this gift to the athletics' program in his honor."

Here is where it really gets good. Rather than give it to one of the big name guys--you know, the ones everyone already knows and expects big things out of--it is going to go to a walk-on player.

The life of scholarship players has been well-documented over the years and has finally resulted in some change being made (i.e. no food restrictions), but the life of walk-ons is harder. Not only do these guys have their responsibilities to the team, but they have to worry about getting school paid for.

If they are able to find other grants and scholarships to cover expenses they have to make sure they are able to maintain their eligibility for them. That translates in to an additional workload they have to handle during the season that their scholarship counterparts do not.

So if they are able to become leaders and make an impact on the team they deserve to be rewarded--and to have life made a little bit easier.

  1. Hats off to the David Glenn Family for honoring these amazing student-athletes! At South Carolina and other programs across the country, walk-ons play key roles.
