Cleveland Browns Should Give Connor Shaw a Shot at the Starter's Job

With two preseason games to go the Cleveland Browns were hoping to name the starting quarterback after Monday night's game against the Washington Redskins. If they do based off the body of work shown the job should go to the one game that has not been mentioned as even a dark horse candidate for the job.

I'm talking about former South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw.

What everyone is going to be talking about is the Hail Mary at the end of the game that brought the Browns within one. Being the preseason the team went for two and missed, but had it been the regular season he just forced overtime.

Not bad for a rookie, right?

That play was just one of many though. Of the three Browns quarterbacks he was the only one that looked poised in the pocket, he moved well, and most of all he actually connected on all but one pass. Hoyer? Manziel? Not so much!

The problem with extending the competition another week is that means the starter is going to get one less week practicing with the first team so they can get on the same page. Since it was painfully clear Hoyer and Manziel were not in sync with their receivers they need the time.

Shaw's performance does have to be taken with a grain of salt. He did play against a bunch of guys that will likely be out of a job in a couple weeks. Maybe if he played against the 1's or 2's he would not have looked as good.

But unless the Browns give him a chance they will not find out.

  1. After that performance he at least should get some practice reps with number 2's. He is a smart kid from a football family and is a proven winner.

What are the Browns afraid of? He might show something and get picked up on waivers then never make it to their practice squad? Let him play!

  2. He was 24-0 at home in South Carolina and had three strait 11 win seasons. He had a TD to INT ratio of 24 to 1. All this in one of the toughest conferences in D1 football. What more do you have to do to be considered a serious NFL prospect? Joseph Goebbels said "repeat the lie often enough, and people will believe it". I'm not buying the lie about Conner Shaw. The guy can flat out play! Show me any team he has ever been on where he didn't win!
